New victory for the unstoppable Nelly Korda on the LPGA Tour

Date:

Nelly Korda won by third consecutive week on the LPGA Tour and for the fourth consecutive tournament by defeating Irish Leona Maguire 4 and 3 in the title match of T-Mobile Match Play in Las Vegas.

Korda raced to a 4-up lead on the seventh hole by winning the second hole and then made three straight birdies from Nos. 5 to 7 in Shadow Creek. Maguire’s par on the par-4 ninth was enough to put his rival in the match, as the American made bogey on that hole.

But Korda responded immediately by winning the 10th, and a birdie on the par-4 12th put him at 5 with six to play. Maguire stayed afloat by winning the next two holes with birdies, his second and third birdies of the day, to close the gap to 3 under at four games. But Korda followed up with the winning par putt on the par-four 15th hole.

Korda won the Championship LPGA Drive is on in late January in his hometown of Bradenton, Florida. After skipping the Asian tour, he won the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship and the Ford Championship in the last two weeks. Winner of just one major, the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship, she looks to be the favorite in the first women’s major of the year in two weeks, the Chevron Championship in The Woodlands, Texas.
