Ben Shelton won the second ATP title of his career after defeating the defending champion Frances Tiafoe 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 this Sunday to win the Houston ATP 250in clay.
Shelton, 21, hit 11 aces en route to becoming the youngest player to win the event since Andy Roddick did it at age 19 in 2002. Shelton overcame his struggles on clay courts. He is 2-7 in his career on the slowest surface and has lost his last five matches on clay before starting this week’s tournament.
But Shelton survived three three-set matches to take the title, his first since winning in Tokyo in October. The former Florida Gator player won 83% of his first serve points according to Infosys ATP Stats to win after 2 hours and 16 minutes. He and Tiafoe are friends and joked after the game.
