Three drones exploded over Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant on Sunday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed. The Russian-appointed government blames Ukraine. Their military intelligence contradicts this – and suggests a Russian attack under a false flag.
Ukraine was not involved in the “armed provocations” at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service (HUR), told Ukrayinska Pravda. Russia, on the other hand, has often carried out false flag attacks, he said.
“False flag attacks again and again”
“The attacking state has once again endangered the safety of this nuclear facility, civilians and the environment across Europe. Russian attacks, including false flag operations, on the territory of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant are the criminal and well-known tactics that the occupiers repeatedly resort to,” Yusov said.
But he did not directly blame the invaders for the drone strikes. In the past, Russia and Ukraine have often accused each other of shelling the facility.
The HUR spokesperson also recalled that the Russians occupied the nuclear power plant with soldiers, stored weapons there and mined the plant’s facilities. He called on Russia to withdraw its troops: “This is the only way Ukraine can regain control of this important nuclear power plant and meet all necessary international standards.”
IAEA: Three direct hits, but radiation normal
The IAEA confirmed on Sunday “three direct hits” on the occupied nuclear power plant at the front. A drone exploded on the dome of a power station block, but caused no damage. The radiation at the six reactors is normal.
According to the nuclear power plant’s Russian-appointed board, another drone damaged a truck near the nuclear power plant’s canteen. Three employees were injured in the shelling. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi urgently warned the parties to the conflict on Sunday evening against attacking nuclear facilities.
