Andoni Zubizarreta is in the spotlight of a big club in Europe. The former international goalkeeper and former sports director of Athletic Bilbao, FC Barcelona and Olympique de Marseille, is one of the names being considered at Porto. According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Zubizarreta will be the firm bet of André Villas-Boas, who is running in the club’s presidential election.
On April 27, elections will be held for the presidency of the ‘dragos’ and Villas-Boas, the emblematic coach who replaced José Mourinho on the Porto bench, will have to compete with Nuno Pinto da Costa, eternal president for 41 years and who, at the age of 87, aspires to continue ruling Porto.
Villas-Boas wants Zubizarreta, who stopped being sports director of Olympique de Marseille in 2020. Previously, he served in that office with the highest responsibility for sports management at Athletic, between 2001 and 2004, and at Barça , from 2010 to 2015.
Along with Villas Boas, Zubizarreta worked with OM in the 2019-2020 season, when one was the coach and the other the sports director.
