After a 2-2 tie at 90 minutes, the United States won the shootout 5-4 thanks to Naeher, who stepped to her right to deny Evelyne Viens.
The United States won the SheBelieves Cup championship for the fifth year in a row, but they have won seven of the competition’s nine years. Sophia Smith scored in the 50th and 68th minutes to beat Adriana León’s goal in the 40th minute. Canada tied the score at 2-2 in the 86th minute, with a penalty, thanks to León, who was fouled by Crystal Dunn.
The United States and Canada already met in the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup semifinal on March 6 in San Diego, with the United States winning 3-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. It was the last game for interim American coach Twila Kilgore before Emma Hayes, who is currently finishing her coaching duties at Chelsea, takes over as coach in May.
