The relentless calendar of City of Manchester in search of a second consecutive treble takes its toll on the team’s most important player: Rodri. The Spanish international has not missed any of his last 66 matches and the national team in a streak of more than a year. And after City’s 3-3 draw against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, he made sure he needed a break.
“Each of us can do better, even me, but honestly, we need to rest. I need this. I need a rest,” Rodri told reporters after the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. That break could come on Saturday at home to Luton, with City entering third place and a point behind Arsenal and Liverpool. The second leg against Real Madrid is four days later, with City playing two games in a week.
City have lost three league games this season (against Wolverhampton, Arsenal and Aston Villa) and they all came while Rodri was suspended. City’s loss against Newcastle also in the third round of the English League. However, Rodri was rested for City’s last match against Luton, in the FA Cup in February, and the team won 6-2 at Kenilworth Road. “We’ll see how we cope. Sometimes it is what it is but a break is something we are planning, yes.”
