Tsitsipas, former world number 3 who fell to 12th in the rankings, will return this Sunday to the final nine months later, since he won his 10th ATP title in July 2023. Los Cabos (Mexico). The Serbian Novak Djokovic (1st) or Norwegian Casper Ruud (10th) will be his rival and you.
Stefanos joins the select group of tennis players who have played at least three finals in Monte Carlo in It’s Tomorrowa list clearly topped by the king of clay, Rafael Nadal (11), and completed by Björn Borg (3), Thomas Muster (3), Ilie Nastase (3) and now Tsitsipas, 25 years old.
Sinner, 22 and world No. 2, has only lost one game this season, against Espanyol Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of Indian Wells Masters 1,000. The 2024 leader in victories (25) and titles (3) looked set to extend his streak, but some last-minute discomfort lowered his physical condition in the match and in he finally surrendered to Tsitsipas.
The Greek won the first set (6-4), but the Italian’s reaction was consistent with his excellent performance this season: he not only leveled the match (3-6), but he enjoyed an almost certain situation to tie the victory : he had two balls to go 1-4 in the third set, with two break ups and a serve, but Stefanos saved those two break balls to keep the contest alive (2-3)
Sinner was still ahead, but at 3-4 he requested medical help for some discomfort in his left leg and, in the next game, which was very competitive, Tsitsipas leveled the score with his fifth break point.
That morale boost relaunched the Greek against an increasingly affected Sinner, who now lacked the spark of previous games. Stefanos broke the Italian’s serve again in the 10th game (6-4) and advanced to his seventh Masters 1,000 category final, his first since losing to Coric Borna in Cincinnati’2022.
His last victory against a world top-3 player dated from the same tournament: he then beat No. 1 then. Daniel Medvedev in the semi-finals and now beat Sinner (2nd) in the Monte Carlo semi-finals. With his victory over Jannik, Tsitsipas will return to the top-10 next Monday and will try to add his third Principality title on Sunday after reigning in 2021 and 2022.
