Pidcock won the Amstel Gold Race and signed his first victory of the year

Date:

The British Thomas Pidcockof the INEOS Grenadiers team, achieved its first victory of the year this Sunday by winning the 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Racecontested over 253.6 kilometers between the Dutch towns of Maastricht and Berg en Terblijt.

Pidcock, 24, won the four-way sprint that settled the race ahead of the Swiss Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and the Belgians Tiesj Benoot (Visma) and Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal-QuickStep), in a test where one of the great favorites, the Dutch Mathieu Van der Poel never had a leading role.

It was the fifth road victory for Pidcock, the current 2022 Olympic and World and European mountain bike champion, and 2022 cyclocross world champion.

This quartet was part of a twelve-man attack that formed at the top of the Eyserbosweg with 35 km to go. And the four of them were left alone leading the penultimate climb to Geulhemmerberg. Mathieu van der Poel and the Alpecin-Deceuninck team have already failed.

Pidcock later attempted to solo the final ascent of the Bemelerberg. Benoot tried to surprise the British and Hirschi with an attack, but he was unable to open a gap.

In the latter part Pidcock imposed his speed, although Hirschi pressed him to the end. Benoot climbed to the third step of the podium, while Vansevenant held off Frenchman Paul Lapeira to take fourth place.
