A semi-professional footballer has died after suffering heart failure on the field

Mattia Giani, semi-professional player for Castelfiorentino United 1925, a team from the fifth category of Italian football, died on Monday at the age of 26 after suffering heart failure on Sunday, in a match against Lanciotto Campi.

“Mattia did not survive. In these moments words are lost. A terrible tragedy. A crushing pain. We can only give a big hug to the family and his club,” he said on Facebook. Alessio Falorni, mayor of Castelfiorentino, municipality located about 50 kilometers from Florence.

The player collapsed at the Ballerini Municipal Stadium in the 14th minute of the match and required resuscitation by cardiac massage on the field before the defibrillator was used. He was taken to the hospital in a critical situation, unconscious.

Giani made it through the night with complications and this morning he died in the Careggi hospital (Florence, north) where he was admitted.

This Sunday, the Udinese-Roma match, in Serie A, had to be suspended after the Ivorian player Evan Ndicka member of the Roman team felt pain in his chest and needed medical help during the conflict, although his life was not in danger.
