Carlos Alcaraz20 years old and current world No. 3, and Jannik Sinner22 and 2nd in the ranking, expressed mutual admiration and called to lead the next few years on the circuit and be the main heir of ‘Big Three’ who dominated world tennis for most of the 21st century, such is the legacy they will leave behind Novak Djokovic (so far 24 titles of grand slam), Rafael Nadal (22) and Roger Federer (retired at 20).
The Murcian is the youngest world No. 1 in history, an honor he achieved at age 19 by winning his first Grand Slam at US Open 2022. Last season, he added a second Wimbledon and in total 13 ATP titles after winning last month the Indian Wells Masters 1,000.
The Sinner also owns 13 ATP titles after an extraordinary start to 2024 with 25 wins, two losses and three titles, his Grand Slam debut in Australian Open, Rotterdam and the Miami Masters 1,000. Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipasin the semifinals of Indian Wells and Monte Carlo, respectively, are currently the Italian’s sole executioners in 2024.
Alcaraz has praised Sinner many times, his teammate of the generation (4-4 in their direct rivalry), but in a press conference in Barcelonawhere he came out due to an injury to his right arm, raised the tone of his praises, surprising for the meaning and background of all the words uttered by the Spanish tennis player.
“He’s the rival I’ve been with the most, the player to beat, now the best in the world. I will share my whole career with him and I try to improve every training session to try to do things that will hurt him and maybe bother him in games. Sinner is what makes me grow as a player. Djokovic and Medvedev are there, but in the fight over the issue of age and rank is Sinner. Last year I said that this year he would win the Grand Slam and he was going to be No. 1. He already has a Grand Slam and is No. He’s 2 and he only has one spot left,” Alcaraz stated in a compendium of the highly praised draft.
If Carlos recovers from his injury in time, the Madrid Masters 1,000 (April 24-May 5) is the next tournament where Alcaraz and Sinner will play together.
