Ukraine uses polygraph to end referee corruption

Date:

The Ukrainian federation is fed up with referee corruption and has decided to use the polygraph to determine if referees are fit to administer justice in their league matches or if they are hiding secrets related to some kind of ulterior motive in impartiality. The myth Andrey Shevchenko, president of that country’s football federation, is the main supporter and advocate of this approach. “We see in the use of the polygraph an opportunity to get information and know which referees we can or cannot work with,” he said recently, insisting that all those who fail the test will not be able to step on the green to referee a match in the Ukrainian league.

As revealed by The Athletic, the referees who have undergone the polygraph so far have passed the test and received the ‘OK’ to referee matches in the Ukrainian league.

On the other hand, the above is not the only measure adopted to get as far as possible from corruption and arbitral impartiality. Beyond subjecting its referees to a polygraph, the Ukrainian federation chooses randomness as the method for appointing referees for each match. This is not infallible, as a player with a certain predilection towards a team may have to referee that team, but by chance and not by choice.
