This season, I’m looking for intrastories related to the day current players made their debuts playing in the Athletic men’s first team. Everyone, at least now, has had time with the elite as a lion, some more, some less. I think there may be names that catch your attention related to each star’s debut. The established order is the numbers.
Now I’m putting this incident aside again until next week because on a day as special as the day the barge crossed the estuary with Athletic again, it’s worth telling you what that experience was like, at least from my perspective . Now it’s been a week since that day. One week. And as a title, I never saw it live. I saw it on television, I saw it in pictures, but, due to work circumstances, I could not see it live. I didn’t see it in ’83, because I didn’t go. I didn’t see it in ’84 because they took my aitas with my leg in a cast at the height of the Suspension Bridge and I couldn’t get up to see the barge go by. The third time, in my case, is not the charm either, so I have to wait for the fourth time to see live the passing of the most famous boat in the Athletic code.
More than seeing it happen a week ago, I was sad that I couldn’t see it like my family and/or friends. But it is also true that I had the privilege of being able to cover it from a professional point of view at Radio Bilbao, in a special program that we conducted that day. The informative point I have to cover is in the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the final destination of the champions in a day that started in Marítimo del Abra in Getxo, where I had the pleasure to be, before the final against Mallorca, with the Andoni Goikoetxeachampion of ’84.
Before the Deputation, I cover part of the route. I approached the last part of the route, the one that went from the Guggenheim Museum to the Bilbao City Hall, to chat with the fans who had gathered there. There are many families, many crews and many fans outside of Bilbao. It’s also a wonder what moved the barge off Euskadi. Logroño, Barcelona, Málaga or even from Belgium. Amazing. And this is an event beyond sports, beyond Athletic. It’s hard to explain, the feeling. In the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the public presence gradually increased until it reached the ceiling. Not on the level of what was experienced at City Hall, but almost. And they arrived almost two hours late.
The most viral image experienced at the end point of this intense day is that of First Gómez ear absorbent Jauregize on two occasions. Ander Herrera, acting as a veteran, called Bermeo’s attention and removed him from his position to avoid further temptations. A crack. He is not bad as a master of ceremony. Iker Muniain on the balcony of Bilbao’s town hall. In some presentations Txantrea is huge. In some slight excess, as in Sancet. There are very emotional messages like from Inigo Lekueremembering his father, o Asier Villaliberwho pleads in favor of the Basque.
It was an unforgettable and long day, because in our case we had a special Larguero with the presence of two Athletic goalkeepers, First Simon and Julen Aguirrezabala (either Julianas it is called from Murgia) from San Mamés and the great Jose Angel Iribar. Share the table with Dani Ruiz Bazan, Rafael Alcorta, Aitor Larrazabalhe Tchopo, Manu Carreno, Iturralde González, Inigo Marquinez and Dani Garrido This is something that somehow compensates for not seeing the barge pass live. Hopefully the fourth time is the charm. It won’t be something from another Thursday.
