New controversial case in Alonso focused. The Spaniard fought to the limit Carlos Sainz for third position in the Chinese GP sprint race and at the end both drivers were called to the stewards to testify in the investigation of what happened.
What seemed to remain a racing incident turned out to be a penalty for Alonso 10 seconds and three points on over license (now 6 out of 12). The only positive side for the Asturian was that the time penalty did not apply to him as he ended up retiring due to damage caused by contact with Sainz. So, it is permissible but there are no consequences in terms of results.
The action that was sanctioned was Alonso overtaking Carlos at turn 9 where the two went wide and Checo Pérez took the opportunity to pass them both. The Aston Martin player tries to regain the position he lost but the move goes wrong.
Both the Asturian and the Madrid native spoke to DAZN after the sprint and gave their respective versions. None of them were to blame but neither were they accused of making an illegal movement. In fact, they both have a picture leaving to testify chatting casually about what happened. However, the commissioners had a different opinion.
