Santi Cazorla is happy with Oviedo. At 39 years old, he continues to lead the club of his life, which like many others is suffering from financial difficulties. “I would play for free, but it’s not allowed,” said the former Arsenal and Villarreal player. “They made a good offer. My wife told me: ‘No, no, you’re not going to Oviedo to earn, you’re going home to enjoy, to help, to give.’ I called my agent: ‘I don.’ ‘I don’t want money.’ I told the president: I want a minimum wage and 10% of the sale of t-shirts goes to the academy,” he explained to ‘The Guardian’.
“They treated me very well everywhere, at Arsenal everyone loved me, at Villarreal the same, at Recre, at Málaga… but the feeling and responsibility is deeper here. People called it a step back, I won’t get anything, but it’s the opposite. The responsibility is to live up to it,” he said.
Cazorla’s contract expires in June. Regarding his most immediate future, he said: “That can wait. When June comes we will sit down and see what the club wants and what I can offer. I really don’t know what we will do. I don’t look beyond this season, trying to get to the First Division, that “Oviedo deserves it. There is nothing else. My decision will not depend on the division we are in. If retirement means going up to Oviedo, I won’t be playing this weekend.”
