The German Jan-Lennard Struff, fourth seed, inaugurated his record of titles on the ATP circuit by defeating American Taylor Fritz, third, in the Munich final, 7-5, 6-3.
At almost 34 years old, Struff is playing in his fourth final, this time against a player he has never faced on the ground.. It is also the second time he has played a title match in Munich, where he was runner-up in 2021. The other two finals were lost last year in Madrid, with Carlos Alcaraz, and in Stuttgart with the North American Frances Tiafoe.
The slowness of the track and the low temperature in the German cityjust four degrees above zero on Sunday, was no deterrent for Struff and seemed to affect Fritz, who was often cornered by his rival’s powerful forehand.
After overcoming a couple of losses at the end of the first set, Jan-Lennard Struff quickly took the lead in the second and after 79 minutes he lifted his first ATP title in the tournament where he has a record 18 wins in 24 matches played.
