Jaume Munar became the first Spaniard to win the first round of the men’s draw at the Mutua Madrid Open after defeating Portuguese Nuno Borges 7-5 and 6-4 to meet in the next section with German Jan Lennard Struff, last year’s finalist.
The Balearic tennis player, 73rd in the ATP ranking, will face his fourth appearance in the main draw of the event held at the Caja Mágica. He is in Madrid in the round of 16 which he achieved last year, the first in which he made it past the preliminary qualifying round.
With the 2021 Marbella final as his major ATP tour victory, It took Jaume Munar two hours to defeat the Portuguese player, whom he had never faced before.
Munar’s victory was added to that of Argentine Mariano Navonewho previously eliminated Australian Alexei Popyrin and became Dane Holger Rune’s first opponent at the Madrid Masters 1000.
