They hardly speak German – 44 first-graders are stuck in primary school

Date:

At a German primary school in Ludwigshafen-Hemshof (Rhineland-Palatinate), 44 of the 149 first-graders are in detention this year. Their knowledge of German is too poor and they have to repeat the school year.

The problem has existed for a long time. 98 percent of the students at the Gräfenauschule have a migrant background and usually do not learn German at home, but then need it at school.

Last year there was an even higher percentage of children who remained seated. 39 of the 126 had to repeat the school year.

The lack of places in kindergartens is the biggest problem
According to the school management, it is also problematic: places in kindergartens are scarce, only a fraction of children get one. Many children only come into contact with the German language at school.

Many parents, on the other hand, see a fundamental problem with integration: politicians do not do enough to introduce children to culture and language.

Ministry of Education says it is ‘surprised’
The Ministry of Education and school supervision have always monitored the situation around the “mainly Gräfenau primary school” and have taken numerous measures to improve the situation there,” said a ministry spokesperson.

However, people are “surprised” that despite the “enormous support” – which was also extended last year – “more children have to repeat the first year of school again”.
