He touched the skies on Sunday with his thunderous celebration in the Superclásico of the domestic competition. He now suffers a strong blow from the cup that complicates the classification in the Sudamericana. This is happening to Boca.
Diego Martínez decided to save some starters for the League Cup semi-final with Estudiantes to be played on Tuesday. Out of Luis Advíncula, Marcos Rojo, Lautaro Blanco, Kevin Zenón and Edinson Cavani.
In a mixed formation, Boca came out to play a complicated match against Fortaleza in Brazil. He did not stand at the beginning of each half and ended on his knees, walking at times on the verge of a historic victory.
Jorge Figal failed early on and in a one-on-one match Juan Manuel Lucero put Fortaleza ahead. In that first half, Boca imposed its presence, played evenly and tied it with a goal from Miguel Merentiel (he scored only twice against River), after a good combination between Luca Langoni and Jabes Saralegui.
The worst for Boca came in the second period. He began unfocused, fragile, doubtful. And Fortaleza overcame him with dangerous situations. And Brazil’s goals began to fall. Lucero celebrated again, this time with a stunning header. After a while, Yago Pikachu was crowned twice (the second was with a little luck). And the result was not greater because of Sergio Romero’s hands and because Fortaleza had the wrong grip on some aftershocks.
Boca only reacted when some starters entered. One of them, Zenón, marked the discount, the last 2-4, with a strange shot from outside that dislocated the goalkeeper.
Now in Group D of the Sudamericana the leader is Fortaleza with 9 points, Boca with 4, Trinidad third with 3 and last Nacional de Potosí with 1. Only in this Cup are the first in the round of 16 .And the seconds to do this must be removed from the third parties of the Libertadores groups.
Diego Martínez took the League Cup first. It is visible. I did not expect such a blow to Sudamericana. Now we’ll see how he responds on Tuesday against a tough Estudiantes. Depending on what happens there, this coach’s choice is more or less to blame.
