He MotoGP Spanish GPheld last weekend at the Jerez circuit, was, without a doubt, an absolute success. But not as much (at least, in terms of numbers) as they first lead us to believe.
And, as published by the championship organization itself, in large numbers of spectators watching races on television -broadcast openly on La Sexta, this Sunday’s race was the most watched in the last five years-, there to add to the historic attendance record at the Jerez Circuit.
The championship reported on Sunday Around 300,000 spectators came to the Andalusian track to enjoy the spectacle of the Motorcycle World Championship throughout the weekend. However, in reality (and unfortunately), not that much. Now here near.
And there was an error in the figures distributed by the championship. And not small: the real number was more than 100,000 fewer viewers. All in all, they were 181,289 people those who approached Jerez throughout the Grand Prix.
Dorna Sports, sponsor of the World Cup, confirmed that all a “miscalculation”although more than a third compared to the first figure reported, and means that the real number does not represent any record for the Spanish route.
MotoGP explained this in a statement, in which it apologized for what happened.
“There was a miscalculation in the attendance numbers and, in our desire to celebrate the atmosphere of the event, we published the wrong numbers before the MotoGP race. We apologize for our mistake”began writing the championship, which was recently acquired by Liberty Mediacompany that owns F1.
“The correct attendance for the weekend was 181,289 spectators, which is not a new record, but it makes the Jerez Grand Prix with the highest attendance in almost a decade, continuing the positive trend in numbers and attendance in the sport currently having fun”they continue.
“The 2024 Spanish GP will also be on ‘Best Of’ playlists [los mejores momentos] for years, after a classic clash of the titans [entre Pecco Bagnaia y Marc Márquez]. We hope all attendees and spectators from around the world enjoyed an incredible weekend of racing in Andalusia.”
“MotoGP heads to Le Mans, which now holds the record for the most attended grand prix in MotoGP history, thanks to 278,805 people attending the 2023 French Grand Prix”the championship is over.
