Andrey Rublev, seventh seed, took advantage of disconnections in the match against Alejandro Davidovich, breaking five set points in the first round, to advance to the third round duel and reach the round of 16.
The Russian won 7-6(10) and 6-4 and the opening set set the tone of the match. The Andalusian tennis player is in his hands, who has never been able to beat the Moscow tennis playerwhich already boasts fifteen titles, although in 2024 it can only win in Hong Kong.
Davidovich has never had a set as close against Rublev as in this edition of the Caja Mágica. The man from Malaga, playing in the Madrid Masters 1000 for the tenth time in his career, missed the round of 16 he achieved last year, his best performance in Madrid.
He has five points to go, two with serve on his side, but he squandered them. Then, he surrendered the set to the Russian with a double fault.
This severance cost Davidovich dearly, who lost confidence afterward. Despite the irregularity of his rival, who had more tennis than his results showed due to the instability he showed on court, it was Rublev who sealed the victory to extend his streak on clay.
Rublev is targeting the quarterfinals which he achieved in 2022 and that is the limit he set in Madrid. They will face Dutch Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16which knocked Danish Holger Rune out of the event, which he won 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3.
