The president of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro on Monday received the honorary champion title from World Boxing Association (WBA) president Gilberto Mendozain recognition of his “support for the reproduction of the sport”.
The action for which the title was awarded, broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV), took place at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas, the headquarters of the Executive, in the company of local and international athletes.
The meeting was attended by Venezuelan boxer Roger “El Niño” Gutiérrez, who was decorated by Maduro in January 2021 with the Francisco de Miranda Order in his first class, after the athlete eliminated Nicaraguan René of the WBA super featherweight title. Alvarado in a match held last year.
The meeting at Government headquarters was also attended by the deputy director of the WBA World Championships, Julio Alberto Thyme, and Gutiérrez’s coach Jorge Fernández.
Mendoza’s tenure before the WBA began in 2015, when he succeeded his father -who died in 2016-, of the same name, who was president of the organization from 1982 until he was succeeded by his son, known as “Gilbertico”.
