The documentary series produced by Netflix and focused on athletics will have six chapters and will be released before the Paris Olympic Games – which will be held this summer from July 26 to August 11 -, as revealed by the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe.
“We have extraordinary talent and I hope that Netflix will discover some of that talent and that people will recognize what we have in its six-episode series,” Coe said at the Bahamas World Relay press conference. “It’s going to Paris, that’s all you need to know,” he added.
In recent years, the streaming platform has produced successful series dedicated to other sports such as Formula 1 (Drive for a living), he Golf (in full swing) and the tennis (break point), and the head of athletics hopes that this initiative will be a lever that will help increase the popularity of the sport.
“The consensus among athletes is that we must do more to showcase their abilities, widen the appeal of what they do and ensure that people attending our events for the first time at the Championships understand the exceptional talent that exists in our sport,” he added.
Very few details are still known about the series, but it is known that it will focus on speed tests and that will show exclusive photos of the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships, where the American Noah Lyles won three gold medals.
“I want to thank (the athletes) for being brave and accepting the intrusion of film crews and microphones,” Coe said. “I’ve seen a few of the episodes and I think this will clear everything up.”
Lord Coe also referred to the competitiveness which exists in athletics and global naturetwo aspects of interest to American producers.
“Winning a medal in our sport is statistically more difficult than any other sport, and that’s why everything we do is trying to promote the cause of the athletes and give them more exposure.”
“When I talked to the people at Netflix, what really surprised them (…) is when you go to a World Championship on the first day you celebrate the gold medals from the Dominican Republic or Ecuador, and you know that you are in a truly global sport,” said Coe, adding: “In Budapest 46 countries won medals, 75 countries placed in the top 8, and some countries won medals for the first time . “
Finally, the former British athlete identified the need to keep athletes within athletics, so that they do not leave for other sports: “Our athletes are unique and have transferable skills, which means there is a challenge to keep them in this sport. There are other sports they can play and I know that when I’m on an athletics track (…) there are basketball and NFL recruiters watching the talent show more than anything else more sport,” he concluded.
