Bayern Munich can be punished by UEFA

Date:

We will see if the protests expressed last night by the players of Bayern Munich at the end of last night’s match there were disciplinary consequences. Complaints about the decision on the impermissible purpose De Ligt because the assistant had already whistled for a possible offside at the beginning of the play. A wrong decision by not allowing the game to end for VAR to come in and the semi-automatic offside. But when the Polish referee blows his whistle, he disables everything.

Both the goal and any technological intervention after the whistle were previously disabled. A decision which European football’s top body considered a mistake and action should have been allowed to finish. In fact, UEFA regulations make it clear that the referee’s decisions on the field are not overturned except for identification errors. In particular, Article 9 regarding “disciplinary scope of the decisions made by the referee“. In point 2 he argues that “Decisions made by the referee on the field of play are final and cannot be reviewed by UEFA’s disciplinary bodies.“.

Only in cases of mistaken identity can disciplinary bodies act: “In cases where the referee’s decision involves a clear error (for example the identity of the sanctioned person), only the disciplinary consequences of said decision may be reviewed by UEFA’s disciplinary bodies. In the case of false identification, disciplinary proceedings may only be initiated, in accordance with these regulations, only against the person who committed the offense.“.

We will now see if the statements made last night by coach Tuchel as some of the Bavarian players are within a “behavior that is insulting or otherwise violates basic standards of decency” or from another point of the Disciplinary Code where it is considered punishable “use sporting events for non-sporting events” or “whose behavior brings disrepute to the sport of football and UEFA in particular“.

Everything depends on whether UEFA decides to open a file following the statements made by the German team. Starting with Tomas Tuchel or players like De Ligt, Müller etc…

The Disciplinary Code establishes two possible penalties in its article 15. On the one hand it establishes “suspension for two competitive matches or a specified period for abusive language towards a referee“. At another point in the article, it establishes another game in case the referee is insulted: “Suspension for three competitive matches or for a specified period for insulting a referee“. Now, it is up to UEFA to sanction or not.
