Soldiers’ sports hall – barracks commander refutes criticism of the weight room

Date:

The federal army is investing almost 180 million euros in the country’s largest air base. After the sports hall has been demolished, the soldiers still have to train in alternative neighborhoods. The “Krone” now spoke to the commander of the barracks.

The “Leonardos” are approaching. While the first helicopters have already landed in Langenlebarn, the squadron is expected to grow to 24 by 2028. And so much technology needs its space. As reported, the old sports hall was demolished and a simulator for pilot training was built in its place. The soldiers had to move to a garage for training, which caused criticism and even led to a parliamentary question from the Freedom Party to ÖVP Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

“Can’t do everything at once!”
Now someone has spoken who should know the situation on the ground, after all, he is the commander here. In an interview with the “Krone”, Brigadier General Reinhard Kraft does not want to knock down the “temporary solution”: “We have renewed and repainted the floors. “Many comrades like to train here after their military service,” he summarizes the situation. There are also extensive outdoor facilities and your ID card is also accepted as an entry ticket to Tulln’s indoor pool.

Naturally, the barracks boss would also have preferred that a new sports hall be built immediately. “But we can’t do everything at once,” the Brigadier said. The expansion to the army’s helicopter, drone and reconnaissance hub will cost approximately 180 million euros. More has been invested in the base over the past thirty years.
