Rory McIlroy35 years old and world No. 2, did one of his exhibitions on the last day of Wells Fargo Championship to win this tournament for the fourth time (2010, 2015, 2021, 2024) and add the 26th title to his record on the American PGA circuit.
Champion with five shots ahead Xander Schauffele within Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Clubthe Northern Irish golfer achieved this nine victories on the brink of second grand slam of the season, the PGA Championship to be played next week Louisvillefrom May 16 to 19.
It was his second victory of the season after recently Zurich Classic of New Orleans and, therefore, McIlroy will be one of the great candidates for victory in the US PGA, even if the favorite poster will fall to the American Scottie Schefflerthe world no. 1 who won his second in April August Masters.
Rory started the final day in second place, one shot behind the leader, bogeyed 4 and double bogeyed 18, as his victory was sealed.
Without that last setback, McIlroy’s card would have been even more dazzling. However, his 65 combined with Schauffele’s 71 gave him a very comfortable victory by five strokes, with a total of 267 (-17).
The Northern Irishman will now look to end his bad streak in the grand slamwhere he did not extend his history for 10 years, when he won two ‘majors’ in 2014, the British and the US PGA. Rory opened his ‘majors’ account in 2011 US Open and won his first US PGA in 2012. In total he has four majors and is just short of Masters to complete four Grand Slams.
