Rafa Nadal’s participation in Roland Garros is still up in the air. A heavy defeat in Rome against Hubert Hurkacz hurt the former world number 1, who is in doubt whether to make a final attempt in Paris or not.
“I don’t want to play Roland Garros if I have to go with caution and not give my maximum effort, as happened in Barcelona and Madrid. This is a special tournament in my career and has so much sentimental value to me, that I would rather keep another memory. It will be difficult without me, but I will only play if I feel competitive” declared the Spaniard in an interview with ‘France TV Sport’.
“I’ll only play if I feel I can give 100% of my chances. If it doesn’t mean I win a game, I’ll accept it, but I don’t see myself going on the court knowing I don’t have an option . If there’s a 0.01 chance I want to try it, but if I really don’t, I’d rather not play“added Nadal who was pleased with his physical evolution in recent weeks.
“i’m fine For me it is a great joy to be able to play in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome. It was a hard blow I couldn’t do in Monte Carlo because all these events have great sentimental value for me. For a long time I thought this would be my last active year, but my body reacted worse than expected. Luckily, now I feel better for a few weeks, hopefully I could have made this progress since January,” said the two-time Olympic champion, who hopes not to miss the tag event -it’s hot in Paris.
“There are sensations that you can only experience at the Games, this is the essence of sport. This year they are very special in Paris“So I would be very excited to compete, it’s something that would make me happy,” said Nadal, who is grateful for the signs of love and affection he receives now wherever he goes.
“I’m a little shy and I carry my emotions with me, but I’m very grateful to everyone who has allowed me to experience so many things with their help these years” he concluded.
