With the return of the Great Circus to Old Europe, where most teams have their headquarters, the first of the continental events is usually where the teams present the first extensive package of improvements. And that event coincides in 2024 with the Emilia Romagna GP at Imola, which last year had to be canceled due to the humanitarian emergency in the Italian region following severe flooding that claimed 15 lives and left more than 50,000 displaced.
The historic Imola circuit, which recently hosted a tribute to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger on the 30th anniversary of the tragedies that took their lives on two consecutive days, will be decisive in knowing whether Fernando Alonso that turning point could be made in AMR24 to close the gap on those ahead, especially McLaren and Mercedes who are ahead here in the constructors’ table, and away from RB who came close to them in Miami.
Mike Crack has confirmed that Aston Martin will bring updates to the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to “continue to close the gap to first”.
“We are bringing an update to Imola as part of our ongoing development program throughout the season. It should address some areas of improvement that we have identified, but it is all relative: nothing stands in F1 and our competitors will also bring new parts,” sought to relativize Krack in Aston Martin’s previous statement.
“All we can do is focus on ourselves and continue to close the gap to first. Everyone in the team is putting in a lot of effort, and this weekend’s update is just one example of tireless effort and dedication “There is a lot to expect from Imola,” explained the Aston Martin team boss.
After the first six Grands Prix, the best result of Fernando Alonso, with 33 points, was fifth in Jeddah and sixth in Suzuka, although Krack defends that there is no reason to worry: “We are as we expected . We have closed the gap at the front, but the competition is very tight and the field is very tight. We expect to be fifth fastest and we’ve been there many times at race pace. We are often third in qualifying, which is positive, and we are working hard to develop the car.
“Imola is a special race and often puts on a great show. Getting points is always our first goal every Grand Prix weekend and at Imola it is no different. We have a great pace in qualifying, so our first job is to make sure that continues and then we’ll work hard to get a good result in the race,” he said.
“Normally, there aren’t many overtaking opportunities at Imola, so the track position will be key; the margins are very tight at the moment, which makes qualifying even more important,” he concluded.
