The world of football is an endless box of surprises. This time the surprise came from the Netherlands, with a referee, Jan Smit, and a team, St George, as the main protagonists.
The aforementioned St George, from the fourth division of the Netherlands, compete for promotion with De Valken, a match in which there was a refereeing action that raised all kinds of suspicions. He sent off three players from the same team (De Valken) and added 15 minutes, until St George’s scored the winning goal with a goal from their goalkeeper.
If the injured team’s anger was already brutal, the video of the referee with the St George players celebrating the victory and raising the ‘salad bowl’ went even more viral. The response from the Netherlands Federation was immediate and disqualified the veteran referee for life, who were not satisfied with the decision. ”I sang a song while holding the salad bowl. That’s all I did. I think it’s too much,” commented Jan Smit, in remarks reported by the Dutch magazine ‘Voetbal’.
