Rory McIlroy has changed his preparations for his eighth attempt to end his Grand Slam career and couldn’t be happy with the teams in the game 12 months ago.
McIlroy missed the Masters for the second time in his career last year, but he started 2022 with four straight places out of 15.
After finishing 33rd in the Weather Affected Players League, he decided to skip the WGC match ahead of this week’s Valero Texas Open.
“It’s chalk and cheese,” McIlroy said of what he’s like now from last year.
“It is completely different. I feel more comfortable in my game, I am happy where everything is. Everything seems to be more stable.”
After winning the 2014 Open to secure the third stage of his Grand Slam career, he rested at least a week before the McIlroy Masters, but this year he will compete at TBC San Antonio after an expedition in August.
“I haven’t liked the Match Play formula for the past few years and just wanted to confuse it and still want to feel like I’m going into August all of a sudden,” McIlroy said.
“I wanted my last competition start before August to be an impactful match instead of a match. Those are two completely different mentalities, so that was also part of the reason.
“I’ve been in August for the past few days and went there on my own. I didn’t go with any of the members, and I didn’t stay on the property. I just wanted to come and see the golf course.”
McIlroy thinks it would be “enormous” if Tiger Woods could compete in the Masters next week.
The 15-time main winner did not participate in the Division I event after being critically injured in a car accident in February and fearing amputation of his right leg, but he did play the PNC Championship with himself. Charlie’s son in December and on Tuesday trained with Charlie and Justin Thomas at Augusta National.
“I think the golf tournament and the Masters and everyone being there, it would be phenomenal,” McIlroy said.
“Golf gets stronger when he’s there. It’s going to be great.”
“He was there yesterday trying to see what he can do.”
