Once his winning streak ended, after losing the Cognizant Founders Cup last week, where he equaled the record for consecutive tournament wins, Nelly Korda is back to do what she does best: win.
The American golfer won the Mizuho Americas Open, after an even duel in the last nine holes with Australian Hannah Greenby making par on the 18th hole and taking the title by one stroke (-14 for him and -13 for the ‘aussie’) and signing her sixth victory in seven LPGA Tour tournaments this year.
The victory made the 25-year-old American the fourth player on the circuit to win six times before June 1, joining LPGA Hall of Fame members Babe Zaharias (1951), Louise Suggs (1953) and Lorena Ochoa (2008). He is also the first player since Inbee Park (2013) to register six wins in a season.
ANDThe LPGA record for wins in a season is 13, set by Mickey Wright in 1963. Korda’s 14th career win came a week after Rose Zhang snapped her five tournament winning streak at the Cognizant Founders Cup.
Korda is the eighth player to win six times in one year since 1980. The others are Betsy King (1989), Annika Sorenstam (1997, 2003), Karrie Webb (1999, 2000), Lorena Ochoa (2006, 2008), Park, Beth Daniel (1990) and Yani Tseng (2011).
Cord won $450,000, bringing his career earnings to $11,880,981 and his season earnings to $2,943,708. The tour takes a week off and then heads to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for the US Women’s Open.
Korda dreams of getting the title, but he has not yet achieved it. “Obviously it’s at the top of my priority list,” said. “I just know that nothing is good when you push yourself harder. “I’m going to stay in my bubble that week and I’m going to try little by little.”
If he does, maybe number 7 isn’t too far off.
