The Belgian appointment Marc Bryce as Cameroon’s coach was suspended today by the country’s highest sports court at the request of an amateur football club.
The Cameroon Sports Ministry caused an uproar in early April when it appointed Brys, 61, as the leader of the ‘untamable lion’ without consulting the football federation (FECAFOOT).
Eto’o’s decision
In response to what it considers a unilateral decision by the government, FECAFOOT asked its president Samuel Eto’o to nominate a coach and another coaching staff within 72 hours, deepening their confrontation with the Ministry of Sports.
Eto’o retained Brys as coach, but appointed other assistants, technical, medical and administrative staff.
Denounced by an amateur club
Meanwhile, an amateur club brought the matter to the Arbitration and Conciliation Chamber of the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Cameroon.
In its provisional ruling issued today, the court suspended FECAFOOT’s appointments while it scrutinizes the matter. Interested parties have 24 hours to appeal.
The Federation’s reaction
FECAFOOT responded that it “reserves the right to refer these decisions to FIFA, as they hinder the preparation process for upcoming sporting events.”
“The FECAFOOT Emergency Committee will meet immediately to take appropriate measures,” the organization announced in a statement.
FIFA regulations against government interference in national federations are very strict and often ban countries that fail to comply with these regulations from participating in international competitions.
The president of the Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon, Balla Ongolo Henri, have assured that Eto’o’s appointments will tarnish Cameroon’s image and interfere with preparations for the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup next June.
Bryce, 61 years old, finally signed a contract as a coach on May 8 after being fired Rigobert song in February at the end of the Afroca Cup, where Cameroon fell in the round of 16 against Nigeria (2-0). FECAFOOT did not attend the signing ceremony.
All this chaos is caused by the war they keep Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, Minister of Sports, and That’s it, who assumed the presidency of FECAFOOT in December 2021 and has been accused in recent months of abuse of power, match fixing and corruption. In February he submitted his resignation but the executive committee rejected his resignation.
