The women’s soccer coach’s instructions USA, Emma Hayes, could be heard across the field as his team went through drills just hours ago, in his first training session with his new team. A new style, but with the same level of demand. Hayes and the team are trying to recover quickly before this summer’s Paris Olympics, where they will try to win their fifth Olympic gold medal.
After a few quick meetings, they worked on the field at the University of Colorado, where the team observed the way the Englishwoman wanted to play. “It takes time, but I think everyone is focused, ready and excited about this new opportunity,” said Colorado forward Mallory Swanson, whose team begins the new Hayes season this Saturday in a friendly match in South Korea in Commerce City (Colorado).
Named the United States coach in November, Hayes joined the team in Colorado after his final season as Chelsea coach. No introduction needed. His reputation precedes him. “Everybody in the soccer world knows Emma Hayes,” said forward Sophia Smith, a Colorado native. “He is a legend and his resume speaks for itself. We all trust him. Obviously, trust is something that is built. But because of what he has done for football and for sport, everyone we trust him and we are excited about him ” I’m sure we will learn a lot next week. We have learned a lot in the first few days.”
After Saturday’s game, the team will play another warm-up match against South Korea on June 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota. These matches will allow Hayes to get to know the players closely before making the squad list for the Olympic Games.
