The Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, who fell in the round of 16 of the Paris Masters 1,000 against the Frenchman Ugo Humberthe said he left “hurt because he could have done so much more.”
“You don’t want to say goodbye early in tournaments, especially after a tight match, you leave hurt by the opportunities I had and thinking I could have done a little more,” said the Spaniard after falling to 6 -1, 3 -6 and 7-5.
Alcaraz regretted his bad start to the match against an opponent “that doesn’t give you anything,” but congratulated himself for being mentally strong enough to get back into the game, although he admitted that in the end he did of “a few errors of no importance.”
“This is tennis, we are not robots,” said the number 2 in the ranking, who congratulated his rival for the high level displayed.
“When I played with him I knew that I had to run what was not written, I tried, but he showed a very high level and I was not able to live it,” he added.
Not wanting to downplay Humbert’s merits, Alcaraz complained about the tournament track, which he considered “too fast” and different from other years.
“I’ve been able to play well indoors at Davis, but it’s a slower court than this one. It’s the fastest there is in the Masters 1,000 and I don’t know why they changed it compared to other years. It should be I had to go earlier to Paris to better adapt to the conditions,” he admitted.
The Spaniard said that despite the majority of public support for Humbert, he never felt the same three years ago when he was pitted against Hugo Gaston.
“Since then many things have happened, I won something here in Paris and many French people support me. Now they respect me more than before and I thank them. It’s normal that they support the Frenchman, but they applauded some of the my points,” he said.
