One of five professional players who participated in a study commissioned by Professional Footballers Association (PFA) said use nicotine pouches, snus packets, or bothan investigation announced Tuesday.
In the study, conducted by University of Loughborough628 male soccer players from Premier League and the EFLas well as 51 players from Women’s Super League.
The researchers also interviewed 16 members of club medical and performance staff currently working in men’s football and academies.
“More than half of current soccer users are men indicated that they wanted to quit smoking in the next 12 months”says the study.
“Most players use legal tobacco-free nicotine pouches rather than tobacco-based ‘snus.’
The study revealed that two out of five players tried the bags at least once.
Of the players surveyed who had consumed the substance, many declared the presence of elements of nicotine dependence, the 53% in men’s soccer and the 73% in women, he added. “The results of the study will be used to inform the PFA’s own wellbeing and safeguarding program and to facilitate knowledge sharing with clubs and medical teams around the use of ‘snus’ in football.”
The study added that usage estimates are “likely to be higher than those reported“Because players don’t want to reveal if they use the sachets. “This research will help us ensure that the PFA’s own support services, and club medical teams, are evidence-based specific to football and adapt to the needs of the players,” he said Michael BennettPFA director of player welfare.
