Phil Foden has stated that England are steadily improving as a team and they hope to give their fans a “once in a lifetime” feeling by winning the European Cup in Germany. Under Gareth Southgate, England reached the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup, in addition to reaching the final of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy.
“It’s great to see that we can compete against the best countries and get to the later stages of tournaments. In the past, England teams have struggled to do that,” said Foden in an interview with the ‘Daily Mail’ . “Gareth has been building for a long time and we are moving in the right direction.”
Foden talks about the emotions: “Playing today, you get goosebumps. The roar of the whole stadium. The national anthem. It’s something you always see when you’re a kid and growing up that you know you want to be. an England player. It’s a feeling of “I want for people to have something that happens once in a lifetime.”
Foden, who enjoyed a positive campaign at Manchester City and was crowned Premier League player of the season, will be one of the first names on Southgate’s team sheet. But England also have a top replacement in Cole Palmer (Chelsea), who was named the Premier League young player of the season after joining the London club from City last year.
“The players on the bench are just as good and the team is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time,” Foden said of his former teammate. “All these players are fit. If we’re going to win something, we need these guys to fight for the shirt, to come off the bench and make a difference. I always knew (Palmer) was going to have a brilliant career. You see it right away when you have a top-level player.”
England will play two friendlies, against Bosnia on June 3 in St. James’ Park and Iceland on June 7 at Wembley, before heading to the Euros, where they are in a group with Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia.
