Estonian Ott Tanak took advantage of a puncture by the leader, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier, in the last special of the day and won the Sardinia rally, the sixth round of the World Championship in the category.
Ogier (Toyota) started the day with a lead of 17 seconds, but was very conservative. Gradually, Tanak closed the gap until he was 6.2 seconds away from the Power Stage, the final stretch of the race. Even that time seemed to be enough for Ogier to cope without stress, but a puncture three kilometers from the finish line ruined his strategy.
“I can’t do much; “It’s not a rally, it’s a rally raid,” said a dejected Ogier after the rally two tenths behind the winner. “It’s disappointing, we deserved better, but Ott’s rally was also good, so he deserves it.”
Ott Tanak’s (Hyundai) victory was the narrowest in the history of the world rally championships and his first of the season. Spaniard Dani Sordo, from the same Estonian team, was third, 2.25.80 behind the winner, and his compatriot Jan Solans was eighth. Fourth was Englishman Elfyn Evans in 2.37.80.
Belgian Thierry Neuville continues to lead the general classification of the World Championship, whose seventh round is the Poland rally, from June 27 to 30.
