The International Athletics Federation (World Athletics) has presented a new biennial world championship which will serve as the grand culmination of the 2026 season, with a record prize of 10 million dollars and Budapest as the venue of the inaugural.
The World Athletics Championships are held every two years, and gold medalists receive $150,000 as part of what the world athletics governing body says is the biggest prize awarded in sport.
The inaugural championships will be held over three nights, September 11-13, with each session taking place in less than three hours, in a bid to deliver a fast-paced event that will attract viewers around the world.
The competition involved between eight and 16 of the world’s best athletes per discipline, with selection based primarily on world ranking. Around 400 athletes from around 70 countries are expected to compete.
The traditional world athletics championships are also held every two years. Budapest will host in 2023, and the next one will take place in Tokyo in 2025.
