Date:

This Thursday, June 6, there are 50 days left before the inauguration of the JJ. YES. of Paris 2024. In this final sprint, the Spanish sailing group is at full capacity at Marseille, city that will host this sport.

Since the last international championships of each class of this cycle have been held, they have all followed a complete training program based in Marseille, carrying out the latest material tests and strengthening aspects of the competition that allow them to reach the Games in the best conditions.

Sailing these days in the waters of Marseille allows you to test the weather conditions of the area which, although it is not yet typical of summer, often shows the peculiarities of the Gulf, as commented by Xisco Gil, director of Olympic preparation. “In Marseille there are many options for weather conditions as we have seen in the Olympic class world championship last year, where we had both very windy and weak windy days. Conditions are volatile and these days they are navigating very similar situations.”

Regarding the level at which the team arrived in Marseille, Gil said as an important fact that “we arrived with a team with many possibilities in several classes. During this campaign, we have podiums in six of among them: 470, 49er, 49er FX, iQFOiL for men and women and Kite for women, and Spain is also in the Top10 of both Nacra 17 and ILCA 7.

The action will begin in Marseille on July 28 and all continents will be represented, with 330 athletes from 66 countries. They will compete in ten classes, of which four are doubles: one for men, the 49er, one for women, the 49er FX, and two mixed, the Nacra 17 and the 470, debuting as a mixed class . Of the six individual classes, ILCA 6 and 7 remain unchanged, while iQFOiL, men’s and women’s, is the new windsurfing modality, and Formula Kite will compete for the first time as an Olympic class, as well as versions of boy and girl.

Germany and Great Britain were the only countries to qualify for the 10 entry classes, joined by France as host country. Spain, Italy, China and the United States have nine classified classes each, making up the cast of great sailing powers for these Olympic Games.

The competition will take place on four regatta courses (Orniche, Frioul, Marseille and Calanques), located in the Gulf of Marseille, and will start on the 28th in the men’s and women’s IQ Foil, 49er and 49er FX classes. The men’s and women’s Formula Kite Medal Series will bring down the sailing curtain on the Games on August 8.
