Daniela Fra from Madrid, Jesús David Delgado from the Canary Islands and Sergio Fernández from Navarrethe three Spaniards in the first round of the 400 hurdles, made it to the semifinals of the European Championships in Rome.
Fra, debutant at a full European Championship in the Italian city, was second in his heat with 55.71, a personal best, only surpassed in her career by German Eileen Demes with 55.25. The Spaniard also entered the semifinal with the fifth best time among all participants, including the Dutch Femke Bol, who was exempt from this round.
“Very happy with the race I did. I was very nervous because of all the people with me in the stands. I felt very supported, I set a personal record and I ran as much as I could,” said Daniela Fra, at the end of testing.
In the men’s category, Jesús David Delgado was fourth in his series with 49.82in a very fast series led by Turkish Berke Akcam with 49.32, the second fastest of all the finalists, behind only Irish Thomas Barr with 49.31.
“I feel fine. I was a little nervous because I’m not good at street two.. I thought it went fast, with energy, and in the end it came out the way we wanted and we, which is what I wanted. Tomorrow is a new career, a new day and a new goal,” he said.
The series of Sergio Fernández, Spanish distance record holder, is slower, who was fourth in his career with 49.98, behind Italian Mario Lambrughi (49.74), Swede David Thid (49.81) and Hungarian Arpad Banoczy (49.95). The Spaniard overtook Swiss Dany Brand by just one hundred in the final meters of his race.
