The former international defender of Liverpool, Alan Hansen, is “seriously ill” and in hospital, the Premier League club announced on Sunday. After ending his playing career in 1991, Hansen, now 68, became a well-known television commentator, most notably on the BBC’s flagship show ‘Match of the Day’.
“The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital,” read a statement from the Reds on Sunday. “The club is currently in contact with Alan’s family to provide support at this difficult time. Our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and the entire Hansen family,” he added.
Hansen joined Liverpool in 1977 from Partick Thistle and won three European Cups, eight Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups in 620 appearances for the club. A classy central defender, he earned 26 caps for his country and was part of the Scotland team that competed in the 1982 World Cup.
Gary Lineker called the news “terrible”
Former England striker Gary Lineker, currently host of “Match of the Day,” wrote on social network X: “Horrible news. Our thoughts are with Alan, Janet and the whole family.”
