Koen Casteels, who will be the Belgian team’s starting goalkeeper at the Euro 2024 championships starting Friday in Germany, will play for Al-Qadsiah for the next three seasons, the Qatari club announced today. At 31 years old, the goalkeeper arrived for free from Wolfsburg, where he arrived in 2015 and his contract expires on June 30.
Casteels is Belgium’s first option in the Eurocup after the Madrid player’s resignation Thibaut Courtois who participated in the tournament because of his differences with the coach Domenico Tedesco.
Casteels started his career at Belgian club Genk (2009-2011), where he was a teammate of Courtois, and continued his career in Germany, at German Hoffenheim (2011-2015), Werder Bremen (2015) and Wolfsburg (2015-2024). With this latter team he won the Super Cup in 2015. He was part of the Belgian team that achieved third place in the 2018 World Cup.
Al-Qadsiah, owned by Saudi oil company Aramco, will play in the Saudi Pro League next season after becoming champions of the second category and achieving promotion.
By May, Al-Qadsiah had been strengthened with the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nández, committed to his 28 goals after ending his contract with Cagliari on June 30.
