The IOC Executive Commissiongathered at Lausanne (Switzerland), accepted the recommendation of the Future Host Committee and will ask the Olympic Assembly (Session) in July to vote in favor of granting 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps and those 2034 in the American city of Salt Lake City.
The IOC Session is sovereign, but always approves proposals coming from the Executive.
The vote will be on July 24, the eve of the opening of the Paris Games.
The Executive, however, gave a warning about Alpine’s candidacy, related to the political situation in France, where legislative elections were called.
“The French Alps 2030 project has committed to deliver all remaining guarantees before the IOC Session. Due to the current political situation in France, the documents will not be finalized before the Executive’s decision,” the IOC reported.
Therefore, the decision to propose this region as a place “is subject” to the delivery of a guarantee of the holding of the Games by the French Government and the confirmation of a public contribution to the budget of the organization of the regions of Auvergne-Alpes and Provence -Alpes-Côte d’Azur and the French Government itself.
Once approved by the assembly, 2030 will be the fourth Games to be hosted by France and 2034 will be the second in Salt Lake City. Before that, those in 2026 will take place in Milan-Cortina (Italy).
