He Chicago Red Stars is forced to travel for his September 21 fight against San Diego waves because of a music festival coming to town. ‘Riot Fest’ is an annual event featuring punk rock music, taking place September 20-22 and taking over SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, home of the Red Stars. Chicago will now have to find a new venue to host its game against San Diego.
“It is unfair and unfortunate that our club finds itself in this situation, which highlights the huge disparity in the treatment of women’s versus men’s professional sports,” said Red Stars president Karen Leetzow in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring our players and fans have the highest possible experience on and off the court, and we are working diligently to find a solution to ensure our match on September 21 is a success.”
Chicago is coming off a 2-1 loss to Bay FC on Saturday, a game held at Wrigley Field. The Red Stars set an NWSL attendance record, with 35,038 fans at historic Chicago Cubs stadium.
