“Making a childhood dream come true is huge”

Date:

Yesterday Unai Simón offered an interview to a special envoy of the EFE agency on the Euro Cup in Germany. The starting goalkeeper of Athletic and the Spanish team was asked about some questions related to the tournament that starts tomorrow in German lands. Also about his experiences at the Bilbao club. The Gasteiztarran is faithful in his usual speech.

“The same comparison is always made: if it is better to win a Champions League, a World Cup or a European Championship. I know that it is very nice to win those titles, but my dream as a child was to win a title in Athletic,” he indicated for the first time.

The red and white goalkeeper qualified this answer by emphasizing that “in terms of what the Cup means to the fans, as a child and now a key figure in the team, the ability to win that title is something unique for us. Not unmatched because we hope to repeat it next year, but we lived a moment dreamed of by everyone with the Gabarra.”

Unai Simón further said in his explanations about this: “The feeling of seeing grandparents and parents who believed that their children would not see Athletic win a title and seeing it after 40 years, is something very important to us. The most beautiful”.

There are other clubs and players who have won more titles and trophies than Athletic, but the red and white goalkeeper does not change this latest Cup for anything or anyone in the world. At least, that’s what he clarified in this interview: “Winning big titles with other teams will be the best. Who wouldn’t like, for example, to have six Champions like Carvajal; But what it means to me to fulfill a childhood dream is enormous.

Unai Simón, oddly enough, was declared the Cup champion in place of Julen Agirrezabala, as Valverde chose the latter to complete the KO tournament. Now, with the concentration of the Spanish team, the question of whether he considers himself the starter for La Roja in this Euro Cup has arisen again.

“I will never feel like a starter because that speaks of arrogance and arrogance on my part that I am not there. “I can rely on the factor of starting to play because there is a greater chance that under equal conditions I will play, but in football, like everything in life, if someone is better than you, they are will play,” he added.

More maturity

When asked if he is now more mature as a goalkeeper, Unai Simón answered yes. “But you don’t stop maturing until your career is over. Two seasons ago it was complicated, with a lot of unforced errors as they say in tennis.

The goalkeeper of Gasteiz added in this matter that “I had a thorn in my last game at home against an Elche that was relegated and we lost because of a mistake on my part. I am not guilty of staying outside of Europe because this is the collective, but if I did not make a mistake we will have some more points. It helped me to learn and this year to give the level that I gave. It is because of the maturity that I did not do anything different and I also trained, but I hope that next year with all the improvements of this year I will be a better goalkeeper and continue to grow until the end.
