Austria’s most experienced mountain meteorologist Gerhard Hohenwarter is convinced that there is no such thing as a sudden and unexpected change in the weather. He explains why and what you should pay attention to when touring.
Summer – meteorologically it has already started – has been desperate so far. Rain alternates with sunshine almost every day. “We have an established weather situation,” sighs Hohenwarter: “The strong summer sun heats the ground, warm, moist air rises and rain showers occur – as in the tropics and again and again.”
What could stop this process? “A stable high-pressure area that dries up the air,” Gerhard explains: “But such a stable high-pressure area is currently not in sight, which also makes planning mountain tours in the Eastern Alps particularly difficult this year.”
