The front of Chelsea Sam Kerr has signed a contract extension with the blue club until 2026, the Women’s Super League (WSL) champions announced on Thursday. Kerr, Australia’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 128 appearances, has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in training at Chelsea in January.
“I’m very excited to continue pushing here to win more titles for Chelsea,” said Kerr, whose contract is due to expire this year. The 30-year-old footballer has scored 99 goals in 128 games with the London team since his arrival in the 2019-20 season. During his time at Chelsea he won the league five times, as well as three FA Cups and two League Cups.
The forward will start, like his teammates, a new phase at Chelsea today without Emma Hayes and with Sonia Bompastor, who signed for four seasons.
“After four years, it’s really hard to process my feelings,” Kerr added in a video posted on Chelsea’s social media channels. “My time at Chelsea will be unforgettable, I have made many amazing memories, lifelong dreams and won trophies. To the fans, remember I will always be Chelsea. I hope you welcome Sonia tomorrow hands and continue to support us all”.
The Matildas captain will stand trial in Britain next year on charges of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer in January 2023. He pleaded not guilty in March.
