Thirty years after the referendum, we look around Ehrenhausen in Styria: in the then municipality of Retznei, now the Ehrenhausen district, 84 percent voted in favor of joining the EU. Why were there so many supporters back then? And has the euphoria now subsided?
A sensational 84.6 percent of the population voted yes, only 15.4 percent voted no: In Retznei, EU supporters celebrated a brilliant success in the referendum on EU accession on June 12, 1994. The Weinstrasse community set a record : there were no more pro votes in any city in Styria.
Exactly 30 years later to the day, the mayor of Ehrenhausen, where Retznei is now a district, opens the doors of the municipal office to us. We ask Hannes Zweytick: “Is there still such great support for Europe?”
