This is what the US Open golf classification looks like after day one

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and American Patrick Cantlay share the lead at the US Openone of the great golf tournaments, whose first round was played this Thursday in Pinehurst (North Carolina).

Rory McIlroy, world number 3, had a good dayfinishing with a six-foot putt and a card with five birdies and no bogeys.

Patrick Cantlay, seeking his first major title, birdied three of his last five holes to share the lead, one stroke ahead of Swede Ludvig Aberg.

World number 1 Scottie Scheffler, winner of the prestigious Masters in April, is ranked 34thsix shots from the lead.

Once again the legend Tiger Woods had a difficult first roundfinished in 87th place, 9 strokes behind McIlroy and Cantlay.

The man with 15 major titles is playing in his third major tournament this season, a year after undergoing ankle surgery following a car accident in 2021. His return to competition since February has so far been uncertain, with with a 60th place finish at the Masters followed by missing a cut at the PGA Championship in May.
