Patrick Cantlay and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy shot five under par on Thursday and are the early leaders at the US Openwhich will be held at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina (USA) until this Sunday.

They added an impact advantage to Swede Ludvig Aberg (-4) and two to Bryson DeChambeau and Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, in a tournament where Jon Rahm is out due to injury.

It was not a positive opening day for Scottie Scheffler, the strongest player of the moment and winner of five tournaments this season.

Scheffler arrives at Pinehurst after winning the Memorialbut this Thursday it did not go beyond a modest over par.

He made two birdies for three bogeys and will need to come back if he wants to get close to the -5 of the two leaders Cantlay and McIlroy.

Collin Morikawa and Brooks Koepka also didn’t have a good day and signed the pair.

It was a very complicated day for Tiger Woods, who delivered a card of 74 strokesfour over par, with six bogeys and two birdies.

Only fourteen players have delivered cards under par at the start of the tournament, the third ‘major’ this season.

Rahm is not there

The US Open will be held without the participation of Jon Rahmchampion of this tournament in 2021, who had to resign due to a toe infection.

“After consulting with several doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from the US Open Championship this week,” Rahm wrote on his ‘X’ account on Tuesday.

To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I wish all the participants the best of luck.. I want to thank all the USGA staff, volunteers and the Pinehurst community for putting on what I’m sure will be an incredible championship. I hope to be back in action soon!” he added at the time.

Rahm left LIV Houston last weekend due to illness caused by an infection.

Without Barrika, his compatriot Sergio García signed an under par, with a round with no errors and only one birdie. The day was much more complicated for Eugenio López Chacarra, who delivered a card of 75 strokes, five over par. David Puig did not go over six over par.

Argentine Emiliano Grillo signed for par, while Colombian Nicolás Echavarría delivered a card of 72 strokes, two over par. For his part, Mexican Omar Morales recorded three over par.
