The British David Beckhamformer soccer player for Real Madrid and Manchester United and co-owner of Inter Miami, confirmed Thursday that he has plans to create a women’s soccer team in Miami. “We’re trying to create a women’s (soccer) team in Miami, but it’s been a difficult few years. We have a lot of things on the table, but that’s our plan,” Beckham said in an interview with ‘Variety’.
The Briton, who took Inter Miami to another dimension by signing Argentine Lionel Messi last year, says he has been blown away by the popularity of women’s soccer since he came to the United States as a soccer player in 2007 to performed with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
“When I moved to Los Angeles in 2007 I wouldn’t say I was jealous, but I was a little jealous of how big women’s soccer was here,” Beckham said. “I was going through different fields in Los Angeles and there were a lot of girls playing. And I thought that was the level we needed to reach,” she added.
In those years, even though MLS had not achieved the growth of recent times, it was clear to Beckham that soccer had a lot of potential in the United States. “I moved with my family to play in MLS with the Galaxy because I knew there was potential. It will be a challenge and I’m happy to play a small role in making the league as big as it is today,” he said.
Beckham, 49, is working with brothers José and Jorge Mas on the ambitious Inter Miami sports project, which in addition to Messi has included Uruguayan Luis Suárez and Spaniards Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
